The process below covers the parts that matter most: setting up the letter system, drawing consistent glyphs, cleaning vectors, and choosing the right route for export. That is where most first attempts succeed or fall apart.
The fastest way to think about the workflow
- Use Illustrator to draw and refine vector letterforms, not to finish the font file by itself.
- Set your baseline, x-height, cap height, ascenders, and descenders before drawing serious glyphs.
- Start with control letters like H, O, n, o, a, and p so you can judge rhythm early.
- Clean paths aggressively: closed shapes, fewer anchor points, and consistent curves matter more than decoration.
- Export through a font plug-in or dedicated font editor if you want a real OTF or TTF file.
- Test the font in real layouts, not only inside Illustrator.
Illustrator is the drawing stage, not the finish line
The biggest misconception is that Illustrator itself is the whole font-making tool. It is not. Illustrator is excellent for vector drawing, precise anchor control, and visual refinement, but a finished font still needs a font-building step after the artwork is designed.
That distinction matters because a typeface is the design system, while a font is the file you install and use. Adobe’s own guidance describes the workflow as sketching, vectorizing, refining, and then exporting with additional plug-ins. That lines up with real production work: Illustrator gives you the forms, but another tool handles the font structure, naming, and output.

Set the proportions before you draw a single serious glyph
A custom font looks amateur fast when the proportions are improvised letter by letter. Before I draw anything polished, I set guides for the baseline, x-height, cap height, ascenders, and descenders. Those guides keep every glyph inside the same visual system.

- Baseline is the line most letters sit on.
- x-height is the height of lowercase letters such as x, n, and o.

- Overshoot is the slight extra height or depth you give round shapes so they do not look smaller than flat ones.
These are not cosmetic details. They define the rhythm of the typeface. If the cap height feels too low, the letters look timid. If the x-height is too tall, the face can become heavy and cramped. If the overshoot is ignored, round letters like O and C will look subtly short next to H or E.
I like to build these decisions into the artboard before drawing the first glyph. That saves time later, because you are not constantly redrawing letters to fix a problem that started in the measurement stage. Once the proportions are locked, the alphabet becomes much easier to keep coherent.

Draw a small control set first
Do not start with the most decorative letters. Start with the letters that reveal whether the system works. I usually begin with H, O, n, o, a, p, q, and s. Those shapes expose straight stems, round bowls, curves, joins, and descenders before I waste time on the more obvious letters.
The reason is simple: if your H and O do not agree on stroke weight and spacing, every other glyph will inherit the problem. If the n and o do not feel like they belong to the same family, the lowercase text will look fractured. I treat the first few letters as a diagnostic set, not as finished art.
Three habits help here:
- Draw the structural skeleton first, then add style.
- Keep repeated strokes visually consistent, even if they are not mathematically identical.
- Mirror shapes when it is efficient, but correct them by eye when symmetry looks too mechanical.
If you are starting from hand sketches, place the sketch in Illustrator and trace with intent. I do not lean on automatic tracing for final glyphs unless the style is intentionally rough. Clean every path like it is going to production
This is the stage most beginners rush, and it shows. A font can have a good idea and still feel broken because the paths are messy. Too many anchor points, open contours, uneven handles, and accidental bumps all become obvious once the letters are used at text size.
If you begin with live text as a placeholder, convert it to outlines only when you are ready to stop editing it as text. Adobe’s outline workflow is clear about the tradeoff: once text becomes paths, it is no longer editable with text controls. That is useful when you want full vector freedom, but it is also a point of no return.
My cleanup checklist looks like this:
- Remove stray points and simplify curves where possible.
- Keep shapes closed unless the design intentionally uses open forms.
- Check counters, the interior spaces in letters like o, e, and p, so they do not collapse.
- Make sure stroke thickness feels consistent across similar parts of the alphabet.
- Watch the joins in letters like a, g, k, and s, because those are where awkward bumps hide.
- Test letters at small sizes, because rough vectors often look fine when zoomed in and wrong when used normally.
I also like to flip glyphs horizontally or view them at a reduced size. That strips away the emotional attachment to the drawing and shows whether the forms still hold up. If a letter only looks good when you are zoomed in at 800 percent, it is not ready yet. Once the outlines are clean, the font-building step becomes much smoother.
Choose the export path that matches the font you want to make
This is where the practical decision happens. Illustrator can help you design the letters, but the actual export route depends on how serious the font project is. Fontself Maker is the most direct Illustrator-based option I would consider: it is an extension built to turn lettering into OpenType fonts, and its current guidance says it works with Illustrator and requires CC 2025 or newer.
If you want something faster and lighter, that route is attractive. If you want more control, a dedicated font editor is usually the better long-term choice. Here is how I would judge the options:

Finish the character set and test it in real layouts
A font is not ready when the alphabet looks nice. It is ready when it survives actual use. That means you need punctuation, numerals, spacing, and a few high-value test strings before you call it done.
At minimum, I would check these parts of the set:
- Uppercase and lowercase letters.
- Numerals from 0 to 9.
- Basic punctuation such as period, comma, apostrophe, quotation marks, hyphen, colon, and semicolon.
- Currency symbols if the font may be used for branding or editorial work.
- Accented letters if the font might need to travel beyond plain English.
Then I test spacing with strings that expose problems quickly: AV, To, Ta, Yo, Wa, nn, oo, and rn. These are useful because they reveal kerning and rhythm issues that are invisible when you look at one letter at a time.
I also test the font in more than one environment. A design can look fine inside Illustrator and still render awkwardly in a browser, a layout app, or a presentation deck. That is normal. Different software handles font rendering slightly differently, so I always check a few real-world contexts before I trust the file.
For an entertainment or lifestyle project, I would test it on the kind of material it will actually live in: poster headlines, event graphics, social posts, lower thirds, and short brand phrases. A custom font that works only in a pristine mockup is not especially useful.
Ship the first useful version before you chase the fancy features
If I were building a first release, I would keep the scope tight. One weight, one style, a solid lowercase, reliable caps, numerals, punctuation, and basic kerning are enough to make the font feel legitimate. That is the version worth shipping.
I would postpone ligatures, stylistic alternates, variable axes, and large language support until the core rhythm is strong. Those features are valuable, but they do not rescue weak proportions or sloppy spacing. In font design, polish is cumulative: a good skeleton makes advanced features worth the effort, while a bad skeleton just becomes more visible.
The cleanest way to think about the whole process is this: Illustrator helps you design the shapes, but the font only becomes real when the spacing, export, and testing all line up. If you keep that sequence straight, you end up with something usable instead of just attractive. That is the difference between a custom alphabet that sits in a folder and a font that actually earns its place in your design toolkit.
