Keylight gets you started, but the matte and spill cleanup decide the result

The cleanest workflow starts with the matte, not the final image
I start by thinking about the alpha channel, not the pretty composite. A green screen key is really a decision about what becomes transparent and what stays visible, so the matte tells you more than the final preview ever will. White means opaque, black means transparent, and gray means trouble if it sits where the subject should be solid.
In current versions of After Effects, I still default to Keylight unless the footage is unusually uneven. It gives you a fast first pass, and then the matte tools do the real cleanup work. Once you read the matte correctly, the initial sample matters a lot less than people think, which is where I go next.

Pull the initial key with the right sample
The first click matters, but not because it has to be perfect. It matters because a clean sample gives the rest of the workflow room to breathe. I look for an area of green that is well lit, reasonably saturated, and free from shadows, wrinkles, or reflections before I sample it.
- Select the footage layer and apply Keylight (1.2) from the Keying effects.
- Use the Screen Colour eyedropper on a clean patch of green in the Composition panel.
- Switch the View menu to Screen Matte so you can inspect the cutout, not just the final look.
- Increase Screen Gain only as much as needed to push weak gray areas toward solid black or white. A conservative starting point is usually safer than an aggressive one.
- Make small changes to Screen Balance if the key feels off, then recheck the matte.
- Leave Replace Method on Source only after the matte is stable enough to evaluate honestly.
The biggest beginner mistake is judging the shot while the matte is still soft and patchy. Once the base key is in place, the real work is tightening the edge so the subject does not look cut out with scissors. That edge work is where most of the visible quality comes from.
Tighten the matte before you touch the color
Most bad keys do not fail because the background is still green. They fail because the matte is too loose, too crunchy, or too noisy around the edges. I treat the matte controls like precision tools, not beauty sliders, and I keep the moves small.

I usually preview on a frame with the most difficult detail first, such as hair, sleeves, or fast hand movement. If that frame holds together, the easier frames usually follow. Once the silhouette looks stable, the next problem is almost always spill, not the key itself.
Remove spill without flattening the image
Green spill is the colored reflection that leaks onto skin, hair, clothing, and translucent edges. It is not the same as the background, and it should not be treated the same way. If you try to fix spill only by pushing matte sliders harder, you often trade one problem for another and end up with a subject that looks dead or plastic.
The safest order is still the one that works most often: Keylight first, then Key Cleaner, then Advanced Spill Suppressor. That sequence gives you a clean base before you remove the color contamination that clings to the edge. I keep the suppression subtle, because aggressive spill cleanup can wreck skin tones faster than people expect.
- Check shoulders, jawlines, and hair edges first, because that is where spill usually shows up earliest.
- If the subject starts turning gray or pale, back off the spill suppression before you keep tuning the matte.
- Watch transparent objects separately, since glass and thin fabric often need gentler handling than skin.
- Use Final Result only after you have checked the edge in Screen Matte and confirmed the matte itself is stable.
If spill is still visible after that pass, I stop trying to solve everything with one universal adjustment and isolate the problem area instead. That is where masks and split treatments become faster than brute force.
Use masks and duplicate passes when the shot fights back
Some footage simply does not reward a single clean key. Maybe the screen was unevenly lit, maybe there are wrinkles and shadows, or maybe one part of the frame behaves differently because of motion blur or a reflective prop. In those cases, a garbage matte is usually the fastest rescue move.
A garbage matte is just a rough mask that trims away the useless edge zones so the keyer only has to work on the area that matters. That saves time and keeps the key from chasing background noise that no one will ever see in the final composite.

When the screen is badly lit, I do not waste time pretending a perfect single-pass key is inevitable. If the background has uneven green values or the shot includes different shades across the frame, switching methods can save the entire edit. And if the shot still refuses to behave, the more honest answer is rotoscoping.
Know when to switch to Roto Brush or Object Matte
Roto Brush is not a backup for failure; it is the right tool when the green screen is not giving you a clean enough signal. I reach for it when the subject has loose hair, motion blur, occlusion, transparent details, or a screen that is too messy for Keylight to handle cleanly. In those cases, forcing the key usually takes longer and looks worse.
The newer Object Matte tools can also help in current versions, but the practical idea is the same: select the subject directly, refine the edge, and let After Effects propagate the segmentation through the shot. Once the result is good, freeze it so you are not recalculating the same work every time you make a tiny change.

I keep the comp at full quality while refining roto work, because preview shortcuts can hide problems and force extra recalculation. If the footage is borderline, this is where I choose accuracy over speed. The better the source was captured, though, the less often you need to fall back to this stage.
What makes the biggest difference before you open After Effects
The shots that key cleanly are usually the shots that were shot cleanly. That sounds obvious, but it is still the biggest separator between a quick composite and a frustrating cleanup session. I always think about the edit before the shoot ends, because a few small decisions on set can save an hour of edge repair later.
- Light the screen evenly and keep it free of wrinkles, because shadows and texture create extra work for the keyer.
- Give the subject some separation from the screen so green bounce does not contaminate the edges as much.
- Use the highest-quality source you can, with the least compression possible; 4:2:2 generally gives you more room than 4:2:0 or 4:1:1.
- Avoid green wardrobe, reflective jewelry, and props that pick up screen color in obvious ways.
- Check the composite over both light and dark backgrounds before you call the job finished, because fringe problems often hide until the background changes.
The short version is simple: sample cleanly, read the matte honestly, clean spill gently, and switch methods when the footage asks for it. That is the workflow I trust most, because it is predictable on music videos, interviews, and fast social edits alike. If I have a rule here, it is that I would rather spend ten extra minutes on a clean matte than an hour hiding a bad edge in the final composite.
